Our Refugee Awareness Symposium was a huge success!

Some Of Our Amazing Volunteers

Our local committee organized a symposium on refugee issues here at SFU on Friday. The turnout and caliber of the speakers were phenomenal.  It was all made possible in large part due to the tireless efforts of our chair, Gecellie Catungal. Our main speaker was former SRP recipient Floribert Kamabu, a masters in nursing student attending the University of Calgary. Floribert, originally from DRC, delivered a powerful, engaging and passionate speech on his personal story and mission to help refugees. He left everybody that night inspired, awed and entertained. We also owed the symposium’s success to the following amazing volunteers and speakers:

Saleem Spindari: Community Outreach and Seniors’ Programs Coordinator, MOSAIC

Rohene Ishmail: International Student Advisor, SFU International

Lisa Brunner: Graduate student, SFU Geography

Joselyne Niyizigama John: SFU Student and Chair of the Dzaleka Project, a SFU sprung organization aimed at helping refugees in Malawi.

Delphine Umutoni: Student – SFU Health Sciences

Emcees: Likiya Gorle and Alain Ndayishimiye

Robyn Plasterer: WUSC Campus Engagement Liaison Officer

Michelle Kangro: International Student Advisor, SFU International

Finally, none of his would have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors!
